Car hire Travel guides in Spain

When you hire a car in Spain you can leave the usual tourist trail, whilst discovering the true beauty of Spain.

Toledo, Spain by hire car

Why not hire a car from Madrid city centre to visit the historic city of Toledo? You might be advised to stay the night there as there is so much to see and do. Take time to visit the two synagogues and see if you are able to find the mosque (“Mezquita”), hidden down a side street. The cathedral is an impressive Gothic structure which took a staggering two hundred and fifty years to complete. The museum attached is also worth a visit.

The beauty of Toledo lies not only in its historic monuments but also in its geographical situation. Use your hire car to take you up to the dizzy heights of the Parador hotel where you can look down on the city which is built on a rocky mound inside the loop of the river Tajo.

If you are lucky enough to be in Madrid in May time, or during holy week (“Semana Santa”), hire a car to visit the processions which wind around Toledo’s narrow streets.

Segovia, Spain by hire car

As well as hiring a car to visit the stunning Toledo, Segovia is also fascinating. Walt Disney’s fairy castle is supposedly based on the Alcazar. It is certainly a picturesque building and the views from this fourteenth century edifice are not to be missed. The Roman aqueduct is the true symbol of this town and by walking the stairs next to it, you are able to gain a good view. If you have the opportunity to stop in your hire car at one of the small road side restaurants, taste the delicious roast suckling pig for which the area is famous.

El Escorial, Spain by hire car

Another satisfying day out by hire car is to El Escorial, the country setting for the large monastery which houses an impressive number of religious art works by Titian, Velazquez and Jose Ribera, amongst others. There are also some pleasant restaurants and bars in the small town itself which are worth exploring.

Chinchon, Spain by hire car

One little known, yet worthwhile, place to visit is the small town of Chinchon, just 45 kilometres south east of Madrid. If you are in the area at mid-April time, hiring a car to discover the Aniseed and wine festival is a must. You can also stay the night in the beautiful Parador (state run hotel) to enjoy the festivities fully. The plaza (square) is flanked by some attractive bars which serve the local alcoholic speciality, known as “anis” (an aniseed liqeur).
